When i first heard about Fellowes maybe doing a prequel about the time Robert and Cora met i was excited at the chance to see Bate's past. But now i'm thinking, it would probably cover the years before the war and the war itself. We wouldn't have Anna. And around this time Bates would be (possible just) married to Vera. Must of us believe that their problems began during or after the war, so we would possibly have some happy John/Vera times (i've always thought their relationship was very passionate, a lot of emotions and crazy sexy times).
Of course i may be wrong. But, if the prequel happens, and this is what we get, how would you feel seeing a happier side to their relationship? Could we ship them knowing what's next? How would we feel about shipping them? How much would our idea of both of them change?
I don't know, it's late i will post this on tumblr tomorrow, but i would really love to know what do you think.

Sadly, I suspect that Bates would not figure at all in a prequel. He and Robert were together during the Boer War, but all three girls were already born then. It's not clear that they were acquainted earlier, and the fact that Bates was a stranger to the house suggests that they were not. Since Robert would have been away from Downton during the war, they would be unlikely to cover it.
On the other hand, it would be cool to get a window into Bates/Vera. Too many characters in Downton are very one-sided, and Vera is a prime example. If we could see a more rounded picture (passion would help), that would be good. I also wonder about Bates himself. What was he like, before he 'remade himself, completely'? If he was just a temperamental drunk, what led Robert to value him so highly? My supposition is that he was not nearly as bad a character as he imagines.

The characters more likely to feature would be staff like Carson and the dowager I would imagine. Be nice to see a younger Bates and his relationship with Vera though. Maybe if we ask him nicely, Fellowes could write that next.

Not really sold on the idea so far.

I'd rather read it than see some other dude playing Bates. I could then at least visualize Brendan as a younger man being Bates. On the screen all I'm going to be fixated on his how much better it would be if that guy were Brendan.

I really don't like the idea of a prequel. for me prequels always suck, 'cause I wait for too much. And if they make it there is an high chance that I'm not going to see it. even if Bates is there. Mainly if Bates is there, because Brendan won't be playing him, and my sweet Anna won't have a part on it.
